During all my years as a funding advisor, the toughest question to my customers always is:

“What is your business model and unique competitive advantage?”

Surprisingly most businesses cannot crystallize the answer to one simple sentence. It’s understandable and human. We rarely understand our strengths in comparison to others. However, if you want to succeed and if you want to entice investors – it’s A MUST to know your business model at heart in a simple yet compelling format.

This is where Business Model Canvas (BMC) comes in. I wish more companies would utilize it properly. No – it’s not some lame exercise finished in 5 minutes (I know, the canvas looks boring). It’s a tool to self-reflect; what is the company doing, where is it going and what is it good at. What is the company’s success factor?

It’s not the end-all be-all tool for strategizing but it’s a good starting point to visualizing your business plan and comes often useful when discussing with external parties. I recommend every new entrepreneur, startpup and SM-company to spend one day with the canvas. See the canvas below:
